Reading, WRiting, ORal communication, and media studies
These are the 4 strands in secondary English study. We will be practicing skills in all of these areas.
Independent Reading
Reading independently is an amazing and rewarding process. In grade 9, we practice identifying genres and choosing books that we find interesting. We build our stamina and passion for reading by reading every day. We also set Goals for our reading and strategies to reach those goals that we self-assess at each quarter of the semester. We also use our IR books to expand our vocabulary by having a Word of the Day chosen directly from our books, which gives students the chance to give a Book Talk about their current book to the class. Our Reading Log and Book Bingo Activities keep us thinking critically and creatively about the books we are reading and the world around us.
Independent Reading and the related activities help students meet every Reading and Writing expectation in the curriculum!
