Let’s review what we know about Twelfth Night:
- Olivia rejects Orsino because she is “in mourning” for her dead brother
- Feste, Olivia’s dad’s jester or clown, calls her out because shouldn’t she be happy her brother is in heaven? They have a nice, teasing relationship, and Feste reminds us that making jokes requires smarts.
- Viola is posing as Cesario, a eunuch, so she can move safely in the world without her brother, who she thinks died in the shipwreck
- Viola/Cesario is working for Orsino, and has become his favourite. He thinks Cesario is beautiful, and sends Cesario to Olivia. Orsino wants Cesario to convince Olivia to fall in love with Orsino
- Two problems: Viola/Cesario is actually in love with Orsino, and Viola’s attitude with Olivia makes Olivia fall in love with HER instead! Oops.
- Toby Belch, Olivia’s uncle, is a drunk and wants to set up his rich friend with his niece so that he can keep drinking. Sir Andrew isn’t very bright, though, and he doesn’t get the jokes
- Malvolio is Olivia’s head servant and he thinks he’s better than everyone else and can’t stand being teased by Feste or anyone else.

I know the sound is a bit echoey and they speak quickly. Follow along with the transcript here: https://d43fweuh3sg51.cloudfront.net/media/media_files/99a64fd9-8257-440a-b55b-6bad57bc9df0/44b26d48-8daf-4979-acc8-f77da9236808.pdf
Try to sort out what is going on not just through the language, but the TONE (how things are said), the ACTIONS (what a character is doing or their facial expressions), the INTERACTIONS (how two characters act towards each other).
