Social Justice FSE
The lit class this year was inspired by a field trip to the University of Windsor, where they participated in Social Justice Forums. The FSE books by Canadian authors were chosen along the same lines as the topics at the Forum, and students balanced their book with a social justice issue. They co-wrote articles for the school newspaper; completed creative reading logs; constructed a social media-based platform (pinterest, twitter, instagram, or tumblr); and finally, hosted a Social Justice forum here at Essex District High School for their peers, spreading their activist spirit and encouraging the reading of Canadian literature! Thank you to all of the teachers and students who came to visit the forum over the two days.

Erika's tumblr project and her poster board, completed with Rachel, illuminated Barbara Gowdy's The White Bone and animal rights issues in Canada and globally.

Kyrsten's and Amanda's pinterest board for J. G. Sime and poster board on Sister Woman highlighted key women's rights issues as they relate to democracy and ask, what has really changed since the 1920s?
Zach, Lauren, and Hannah chose to use tumblr to express the complex mind of Christopher John Francis Boone, the autistic main character of Mark Haddon's The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night. Their poster board featured information about the stigmas surrounding mental health issues.
Megan and Chelsea created a twitter account for the main character from Jeanette Winterson's Oranges are Not the Only Fruit, and their poster board focused on how faith communities can affect the legal rights of the LGBT community. Log on to twitter.com and follow OrangesFruits4.
Anita and Chelsea chose the forum and their poster board to explore the history of racism in Canada through the story of Obasan, by Joy Kogawa. Too many students were unfamiliar with this aspect of Canada's past.
Bri made a video and used her poster board to raise awareness about disabilities in Canada, stemming from her reading of Frances Itani's Deafening, a CBC Canada Reads Book in 2006.
Kodi and Sierra created a pinterest page based on the main characters in Tomson Highway's Kiss of the Fur Queen. Their poster board outlined many injustices faced by Aboriginal communities, as well as the exciting Idle No More movement that is sweeping Canada today.

The Forum
The last photo is of everyone watching the animated video of Shane Koyczan's spoken poem from his Ted Talk on bullying: "To This Day." It tied together all of our topics and contextualized them in the school environment. Promoting social justice starts in the classroom/school with standing up for our peers! |
